You Can’t Take it With You. Are You Living Your Life With Eternal Perspective?

What in Your Life Will Withstand the Fire Test?
My mom recently passed away and as I sift through her treasured belongings and papers it is never so evident that EVERYTHING has been left behind. It seems so hard to grasp that someone’s life-long collections may not have much value at all to anyone but them. All these things that we put so much energy into buying, collecting, maintaining, storing, etc. All to be left behind…one fateful, unknown day.
I have often pondered the question of what passes the fire test into eternity. I want my life to be purposeful. I want it to be a light to others, some days I am more successful with that than others. A lot of days I don’t get it right, but that spurs me on to do better tomorrow. It seems that the only things that will withstand the fire test is one’s salvation, contributing as God leads us to lead others to salvation through a relationship with Jesus and maybe God’s light that we shine on others to encourage them.
1 Corinthians 3:12-15
Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15 But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.
Are the Moments of Your Life Being Used for Eternal Significance?
Does the thought of this change how you will spend the time that you are given here on Earth? Are you investing your life collecting things that just don’t matter? I am guilty from time to time of spending time trying to find that perfect rug or piece of furniture. I think there is a time and place for placing things in our environment that bring us comfort and peace, but hopefully more of our life is spent doing things that have eternal significance.
We have so many responsibilities and excuses between work, family, etc. but we all have the ability to be a Godly influence to the people that God has put in our path. I try to share God’s love with my clients and the money I earn contributes financially to Godly missions and donations to people God leads me to bless. I also LOVE that I have a job where I am able to listen to sermons/podcasts while I work, if you can’t do this maybe you can while you commute. I love getting paid to listen to God’s word all day; that has been a wonderful blessing in my life. My time writing this blog helps give me extra reason to dive into scripture and I get to encourage others.
Have You Made Other Things in Life a Priority over Christ?
What can you do with your time and talents to bless others or grow deeper in your relationship with Christ? Have you made something else a bigger priority in your life? We should constantly be reassessing this question of how we are impacting eternity with the moments of our life.
Will Your Legacy Live On or Be Revisisted Only at a Gravesite?
There has been a lot of talk about cremation, burial, urns, etc lately and I have NO judgement about what others wishes are when they pass away. For myself though I have never wanted to take up space. Spread my ashes somewhere beautiful and WARM! I don’t want a gravesite that my family will never come to visit.
Lately it has me thinking I want my impact to be lasting in people’s lives. I want my memory to be ALIVE in their every day, not a PLACE they go to remember my life. I want my life to pass the fire test because of all the life I left behind here on Earth. I want my contributions to stay here to be used eternally for the Kingdom.
Eternal Perspective is More Important than any Earthly Treasure
I want to walk into every day with an eternal perspective. That is what I want the goal of each day to be. Another day that I get to live here, another day I can show God’s light, love those around me well and spark curiousity in those who don’t know me….with at least a “What’s different about that girl? I gotta know more about this Jesus character!” That’ll do just fine, more than any earthly treasures that I could have gathered.
1 Peter 1:6-7
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
