More Than Who are You, Whose are You?

We define ourselves in so many different ways. American culture seems to pull us in a hundred different directions if we allow it to. There are so many different roles we play for our jobs, kids, spouses, friends, church, etc. The list could go on and on. Then there are preferences to where and how we spend our “spare” time (if we leave ANY for ourselves); perhaps scrapbooking, gardening, hiking, etc. Maybe some of the ways you spend your time define how you see yourself, such as…crafty, master decorator, gardner extraordinaire, athletic, chef, etc. Sometimes all of these things begin to define how we view ourselves and who we want to be known as. Our appearance, hair, clothes, make-up, etc is a statement of sorts about how we want to be perceived. We could go on all day and night listing off the different ways we spend our time and try to define ourselves. We all have some perception of how we would like the world to see us, maybe we are still working on that image or maybe you nailed it years ago and are quite comfortable in your own skin. My point is that there is so much in the world to distract us from WHOSE we are. We can benefit from all the different aspects, blessings and strengths of our character, but if we forget WHOSE we are….it might as well all be lost.
Psalm 100:3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people.
God is our heavenly Father, if we are truly striving to be more Christ-like then it should be obvious above all our earthly responsibilities and choices WHOSE we are. It shoud be evident in all of our chosen definitions of ourself that WHOSE we are affects EVERYTHING about WHO we are. Defining ourself as a child of God should carry through how we spend our time, what we choose to surround ourselves with and how we treat others. It should be evident in our priorities, actions and demeanor towards others as further spelled out below in Colossians. People around us should be able to see that there is something different about a Christian in their midst, they should be able to see the light of Jesus within you.
Colossians 3:12-15 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
God created us all uniquely which is SO INCREDIBLE! Each one of us has different talents, strengths and abilities that no other human possesses…..maybe it is cliche’, but there is only one YOU. YOU are a chosen and uniquely created child of God.
1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
To be called a child of God is really an image of ourselves that we should stop for a moment and be in awe of. We are CHOSEN children of the Almighty Creator of the Universe. WOW! No matter how you were conceived, you were chosen by God. He formed you.
1 Corinthians 3:23 you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
He desired your uniqueness and has a purpose here on earth that only YOU are perfect to fulfill! If ever there is a doubt in your mind about what in the world you are here for, just remember WHOSE you are. GOD doesn’t make mistakes. GOD chose YOU! Whenever doubt creeps in, REMEMBER WHOSE YOU ARE! You are a CHILD OF GOD!
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
